Cadets Fall to #2 Triton Central in Home Opener

By Connor Simmons | Aug 20, 2023 10:31 PM

After a promising 2022 season and only graduating four seniors, Cascade would be tested in week one of the season against 2A #2 Triton Central Tigers who are coming of a Semi-State appearance the previous season. Cascade would win the opening toss and elect to defer to the second half. After the ensuing kickoff SR QB Jace Stuckey (Eastern Michigan Commit) would connect on a bubble screen on the second play of the game and the Tiger receiver would take it 76 yards to take a 7-0 lead. Cascade would look to answer the gut punch right out of the game. SO Toby Savini, SR Damien Appleby and SO Dayton Mink would hit runs for 5, 5, and 16 on the first series, but on the fourth play of the drive, Appleby would bust through the line of scrimmage fumble and the Tigers had a huge momentum shift. Tigers would only need 5 plays after the turnover to score where SR Ray Crawford would squeak through the line for a 23 yard touchdown run. The Triton Central Tigers would go on to score 35 unanswered points before the Cadets got on the scoreboard. The Cadet offense was unable to find consistent drives until the 3rd and 4th quarter. Cascade offense would find themselves shooting themselves in the foot with penalties and missed blocking assignments. Cascade would threaten to score after driving 45 yards to the Tigers 10 yard line, however were unable to convert a 4th and 4 scenario to keep the drive going. Big plays on defense and mental miscues on offense seemed to be the difference maker on Friday Night. The Cadets would go on a nine play 60 yard drive on their second series of the 2nd half to cap it off with SO Toby Savini finding the end zone to shrink the lead to 28, but with the IHSAA running clock rule, the Cadets seemed to get started too late. The Tigers would answer with an 8 play 72 yard drive to stretch the lead back to 35 points. Cascade would finish the game on a high note with a 9 play 80 yard drive. SR Damien Appleby would find the end zone for his 1st touchdown of the season. Tigers would go on to defeat the Cadets 42-13. Triton Centrals moves on to 1-0, while Cascade drops to 0-1 for the 5th straight year. Cascade will be on the road for week #2 facing the Beech Grove Hornets who are coming off a 50-0 loss to 1A #1 Indianapolis Lutheran Saints.
