Friday Night Preview; Cascade Cadets at Edgewood Mustangs

Cascade is back on the road in week three of the early IHSAA football season to take on the Edgewood Mustangs. Cascade has opened the season 2-0 for the first time since 2006 and are looking to continue to extend their early success vs a 1-1 Edgewood team. Edgewood 36.45, 263rd overall, 54th in 3A. Statewide Polls Cascade Cadets are not ranked in Class 3A. Edgewood Mustangs are not ranked in Class 3A. RECAP OF WEEK #2 Cascade welcomed North Montgomery for their home opener. Cadets took a commanding 21-0 lead with 6:00 minutes left in the second quarter, but weather pushed the game back to finish Saturday morning. The Chargers offense would get on the board after converting a 3-4 to start the game back up early Saturday. Cascade would rattle off 21 straight points to push the lead to 42-8. North Montgomery would put two more scores on the board late, but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome the deficit they faced. Cascade’s high powered offense had 560 yards total, while the defense only gave up 154 yards total. Edgewood hosted the Washington Hatchets for week two. Edgewood led 3-0 through the first half, but Washington would go on to score 22 unanswered points to go on to bring the Mustangs to 1-1 on the season. HEAD COACHES Connor Simmons, 20-25 in his 5th season at Cascade, 24-31 overall in 6 seasons. Scott Fischer, 3-9 in his 2nd season at Edgewood, 20-54 overall in 8 seasons. 2024 vs Common Opponents Indian Creek Sullivan Owen Valley Northview ALL-TIME RECORD This will be the 31st time Edgewood and Cascade will meet on the Gridiron. Last year's meeting finished 63-2 in favor of Cascade. Edgewood leads the all-time series 26-14. The last Edgewood win came in 2018. SETTING THE SCENE Friday Night Cascade will head back on the road for week three taking on the Mustangs of Edgewood on the red turf. There is a lot of history between these two teams, but Edgewood leads the series. Cascade will wear all white Friday Night. After a heat wave last week, it looks like the weather will begin to feel like a fall night. What’s at stake for both teams? Edgewood looks to bounce back after a week two defeat and Cascade looks to get to 3-0 for the first time in 30 years. Both teams have experience coming back, but only one will walk away with a win. Cascade will employ their heavy run wing-t offense, while Edgewood will bring a spread offensive look. Buckle up, carpool to Ellettsville, pack the stands because your Cascade Cadets are road for a Friday Night battle. CADET NOTES Cascade takes their 2-0 record on the road this tomorrow. Cadets knocked off 3A Indian Creek for their first win in week 1 since 2018 and 2A North Montgomery in week 2. Cascade uses a No-Huddle Wing-T attack on offense and a 3-4 on defense. Cascade looks to move to 3-0 for the first time in 30 years. The last 3-0 start was back in 1994 under Head Coach Darrin Fisher. The Cadets will need to play great defense and run the football in order to have success Friday Night against a multiple offensive attack from the Mustangs. JR Brady Trebley is under center for the Cadets. Trebley was 11-16 for 104 yards and 1 touchdown in last week's win over North Montgomery. In week one vs Indian Creek, Trebley was efficient in the passing attack completing 5-7 passes for 45 yards. Trebley moved into 5th all time in passing yards with 1,595 yards surpassing Connor Guthrie. FR Luke Austin and FR Adrian Parsons will serve as the back-up quarterback for the Cadets. Multiple running backs will look to carry the rock for the 2024 season. JR Dayton Mink leads the team with 31 carries for 228 and 2 touchdowns Friday Night vs North Montgomery, Mink moved into 11th all time in school history in rushing yards. SR Daemen Mason and SO Lucas Farmer have combined for 22 carries, 313 yards and 3 touchdowns. The running back group rushed for 455 yards on the ground in week two. Wide receivers will continue to add in their hands to the pass attack this year. JR JT Roshong caught a career high 6 passes for 44 yards and a touchdown in week two. SO Cooper Lievens will look to serve quality minutes as a rotation for Roshong. Tight ends will look to be both physical blockers and pass catchers at the tight end position. Both played a vital role in the success of the rush attack last week setting the edge for the downhill rushing attack. JR Braxton Lewis will serve as the number one tight end. JR Royce Bright will serve as his back-up. Both are physical blockers and possession catchers for the offense. This group will also get back last year's top pass catcher for the offense SO Trent Austin. Four Seniors will anchor the offensive line for Cascade. The offensive line averages in weight a combined 205lbs. SR Josiah Murrain, SR Bryce Hofing, SR Duncan White, and SR Owen Hargis will all look to be the aggressors upfront with the two full years of starting experience they bring to the table. Through two weeks, the No-Huddle Wing-T offense has 837 yards of offense. The offense is averaging 31.5 points per game. In week two, Cadet finished with 560 yards of offense with 455 coming on the ground behind the front six. The defensive line will look to set the tone up front. JR Brody Duncan continues his success on the line with two tackles for a loss, two coming last week. SR Josiah Murrain and SR Duncan White will bring the experience up front. SO Dillon Setty, JR Dominic Appleby, SR Owen Hargis and SR Bryce Hofing will serve as back-ups for this group. Cascade’s front three only gave up 60 yards on the ground last week. The linebacking group settled in last week after a tough week one. JR Braxton Lewis, JR Leland Walker, JR Dayton Mink and FR TJ Turner will get the start at the linebacker core. JR Braxton Lewis had a standout game vs North Montgomery last week with 9 total tackles. JT Leland Walker finished with 5 tackles. SO Wyatt Minardo and JR Baynx Stirling will serve as the back-up for this group. The defensive backs will look to anchor the 3rd level of the defense in week three. This group brings back the most experience on the team. SO Lucas Farmer, the returning leading tackler from the defense last year, finished with 5 tackles and an interception in week two. JR JT Roshong led the group with 7 tackles from the safety position. SR Daemen Mason and JR Marcus Hobson but finished with 3 tackles each. JR Brady Trebley came up with 7 tackles. This group played a strong first game with giving up 94 yards through the air. SR Max Stucky continues to handle the kicking duties for the Cadets. Stucky has fit right into the special teams with having a great day on the turf with kickoffs and is currently 7-8 on extra points attempts. SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS Edgewood is led by 3rd year Head Coach Scott Fischer. The Mustangs are coming off a week two loss to Washington 22-3. Edgewood will look to some key players to have success Friday Night as they host Cascade. SR QB Michael Law will lead the Mustang offense. SR Nehemiah Strunk will be a key two-way player for the Mustang offense and defense Strunk had a huge week on offense in the air with 4 receptions 72 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Mustangs currently have 5 players starting on offense and defense. IHSAA SECTIONAL Cadets are up in 3A for the first time in school history competing in Sectional #29.
