The Lady Cadets returned to the back to the turf field last evening for their third home game in a row when they hosted the Lady Eagles of Brown County High School. The Lady Eagles and Lady Cadets don’t have much of a recent rivalry but they were once members of the Western Indiana Conference and played each other in conference games. Records of these games are a bit inconsistent but Cascade seemed to have a small advantage over Brown County in head to head competitions. Both Cascade and Brown County are assigned to IHSAA 2A soccer sectionals and were once members together in the Western Indiana Athletic Conference. The Lady Cadets took the field last night against Brown County looking to continue their steady game to game improvement. In the two losses this season, the Cadets struggled to control the midfield and successfully move the ball with speed and accuracy. But in their three wins, the Cadets have been able to find space within the attacking third and make the defense move frantically. The comparisions between goals scored in wins (17) and losses (0) validated how much better the Lady Cadets play when they move the ball well. Against Brown County, the Lady Cadets gained control of the ball quickly from the opening whistle and put pressure immediately on the Lady Eagles defense. The Cadets scored first in the game when Regan Franklin settled a deflected pass just outside of the corner of the box and struck a ball that spun away from the goalie’s reach and into the back of the net. The early goal was the second game in a row that Regan had scored and her sixth goal of the season. The quick 1-0 lead prompted the Lady Eagles to make a goalie change as the Cadets looked to keep up their offensive pressure while the Eagles were still a little shocked. Cascade was able to get a second goal in first 10:00 when Ruthie Trump scored her second goal of the season off of Anna Burn’s corner kick. Anna’s well placed corner kick dropped perfectly just in front of the Brown County goalie and Ruth struck the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead with over 33:00 remaining in the first half. The early lead for Cascade allowed both teams to make some substitutions and begin working on special situations on the field. As the game started to develop a flow and pace, the Cadets were able to add one more goal before halftime. Anna Burns recovered a loose ball in the Lady Eagles defensive end and pushed the ball forward quickly. Anna’s pass into the middle found Alexa Rodriguez near the front of the goal who made a nice touch to Ava Allen in an open position. Ava was able to turn her body and strike a solid shot that deflected off the goalie’s hand and into the back of the net. The 3-0 lead the Lady Cadets took into halftime created a tough gap that Brown County knew they would need to quickly overcome in the first portion of the second half if they wanted to get back into the game. The Cadets had scored one of their three goals in the first half from a corner kick and their last goal of the game would come again from a corner kick. Ruthie Trump set up to take a quick corner kick that lofted right in front of the Eagles’ goal. Ava Allen made a small step to readjust her body position and she place a clean header right into the side of the goal. This was Ava Allen’s second goal of the game and her sixth of the season. For the rest of the second half, the Lady Cadets moved players around the field and subbed players in and out to get additional playing time for some players on the bench. The Lady Cadets did give up a late goal to Brown County but the game stayed in the hands of the Cadets for most of the night. The 4-1 victory over the Brown County Lady Eagles advances the Cadets record up to 4-2-1. The Lady Eagles remain winless on the season with an 0-2 record. The Lady Cadets now begin to prepare for another full week of soccer with three games next week. On Monday, the Lady Cadets will make-up their game with the Monrovia Lady Bulldogs (4-0). Thursday, Cascade will travel to West Vigo for their second game of the season against the West Vigo Lady Vikings. On Saturday, the Lady Cadets will host the Lady Tigers Cubs of Greencastle as part of a boys/girls doubleheader.
