The Chesterton varsity baseball team opened their season last night with a big win over the Griffith Panthers by a score of 25 - 0 with twenty two of those runs being scored in the opening frame. All-Stater, Rob Czarniecki, (3-3, HR, 2B, 3R, RBI, BB) started the Trojans hit parade off by hitting a nuke on the second pitch of the contest. Czarniecki would add a double and single to total 7 bases in the route. Troy Barrett,(2-2, 3R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2BB) who started and hurled the first two innings, roped two doubles and scored three times while driving in two. Barrett recorded 5 K,s in the victory and surrendered a cue sticked, dying quail over McClelland's head at first for the lone Griffith knock. Chesterton would add three more when Ethan Glassman hammered a two-run moon shot in the third and John Knight(2-3, 3R, RBI, 2BB) drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth to plate Isaiah Prater(1-1, R, 2B). Glassman was the offensive player of the game going 3-3, scored 4 runs, drove in 7, launched 2 homers, including a grand slam and had one free pass while Knight grabbed the "Hard Hat Player of the Game" honors for his stellar defense at third base. Senior Eli McClelland(2-3, 3R, 4RBI, BB) was like Jack and went up the hill for a two-run jack, the first of his career. Other hitters collecting a multi-hit day were, G Kirkland(2-3, R, 2B, 2RBI), Sully Fleming(2-4, 2R, 2B, 3RBI), and Nate Redman(2-2, 2R, 2B) doubled and singled out of the 9-hole slot. Junior backstop, Caden Hackett, stroked a bases loaded three bagger driving in three Trojan teammates. Lucas DeVore(1-1, 2B) doubled, Mike Szostek(1-1, BB) got his first varsity hit and Logan Chestovich(0-1, 3R) scored three times out of the courtesy runner assignment while Cam Campbell(0-1) patrolled left field in his first varsity start. Senior Dylan Bradford(3 IP, 2BB, 6K) pitched a solid three innings in relief to seal the deal. The Trojan stickmen travel down to Kokomo for a 3 game slate where they face off against Greenfield Central on Friday at 5:45 pm and then Plainfield at 11:45 am followed by a 2:30 pm billing with Cathedral on Saturday in the Bullpen X Prep Baseball Series at Championship Park.
