For the Richmond Red Devils, an unseasonably warm spring has meant outdoor practice for indoor season. On Saturday, they got their chance to return to the indoor track one last time, aiming to punch a potential ticket for the Hoosier State Relays finals on March 23rd. The meet kicked off with the 3200 meter run. In a girls-first year, it was Lizzy Graham who took to the track first, clocking a time of 13:03.42. Alex Orihuela and Ethan Miller took to the track next in the two-mile. Orihuela finished fourth for the day with a time of 9:59.85. Miller finished in 32nd after an unfortunate lap-counting mishap for a time of 11:25.38. In the meantime, the boys field events kicked off at the start of the meet as well. Masson Heiny finished the day with a brand-new personal best in the shot put at 47-11.50. Jacob Lindahl also improved on his earlier performance this season with a best throw of 40-9. On the college-sized board, only Trevin Crosby landed a long jump without scratching, debuting at 15-7.50. Next, the Devils were off to the sprints. In the 60 meter hurdles, Addi Jones and Josh Gilbert made their 2024 debuts. Addi started the season with a 12.00 second flat time in the 60, while Josh finished in 11.06 seconds. In the 60 meter dash, it was KK Hogg and KK Farris-Craig hot on each other’s heels. KK Hogg finished with a time of 8.03 seconds, while KK Farris-Craig finished right behind her in 8.27 seconds. They were sixth and seventh, respectively. For the boys, Antione West finished tenth with a time of 7.25 seconds, while Havi Lapsley finished 35th with a time of 7.58 seconds. With the individual sprints concluded, it was off to the relays. The next race for the Red Devils was the boys 4x800 meter relay. Julian Bowden, Bryce Cordova, Cale Newton, and Ethan Newton finished 12th for the day with a time of 9:06.95. The sprinters came back to the track next with an entry in both 4x200 meter relays. The girls team of Katie Mathena, KK Farris-Craig, KK Hogg, and Shay Sexton finished in fifth with a time of 1:52.68. The boys team of Antione West, Havi Lapsley, Ben Holliday, and Trevin Crosby finished in fourth with a time of 1:35.52. In the final event of the day for the Red Devils, the boys distance medley relay took to the track with a squad built of their strongest runners. Xavier Ogle opened it up in the 1200 meter leg, followed by Trevin Crosby in the 400, Greyson Farmer in the 800, and Alex Orihuela in the 1600. The boys finished in fifth at the meet, but their time of 11:16.81 officially knocked off the indoor DMR record last set in 2006 by 18 seconds. Entries for the Hoosier State Relays finals closed at 11:59 PM on Monday, March 18th. Athletes should know by midday Tuesday if they have qualified to participate on the HSR Finals on Saturday, March 23rd. The Red Devils return to action on Tuesday at their first outdoor meet, an early trip to Connersville. The field events kick off at 5:00 PM alongside the boys and girls 4x800 meter relay.
