Wabash Tennis Cruises to a 5-0 Win over Elwood Wabash celebrated our 6 seniors in style with a 5-0 win over Elwood at home on Monday. The team is now 10-5 on the season and 3-0 in TRC Conference Play. The match was followed by a pleasant celebration for our seniors. Seniors this year for Wabash Tennis are Alex Dinkins, TJ Fritter, Nick Perkins, Troy Guenin-Hodson, Grant Ford and Spencer Stout. Thanks to these young gentleman who have been great teammates to all, and will do great things as they move on in their academic and adult lives. Troy Guenin-Hodson was the first to score for the Apaches at 3 singles. Winning in a convincing 6-0, 6-1 match. Coach Ford shared: "Troy played extremely well and efficiently. When he is on the court, he is focused and determined to win. Tonight was no different as he played his style of tennis and made the match very difficult for his opponent." Following shortly after, Eli Mattern provided the 2nd point for the Apaches at 2 singles. Playing confidently and mixing up shots, creating pace, utilizing spin, and much improved placement, Eli took the match 6-0, 6-1. Grant Ford, playing 1 singles for the Apaches, played an all around impressive match, winning 6-0, 6-3 to secure the match for the Apaches. "Grant, after a great match at Rochester, has really found his stride. Playing with great confidence and the ability to adapt his game plan throughout a match, Grant is a tough out for anyone. Grant brings a quiet and respectful demeanor to the court, but is as competitive as a kid that is out there. Coach Ford and I are thrilled to see his success." Coach Mattern 1 Doubles was a very competitive match for the Apache Duo of Alex Dinkins and Cooper Long. Winning the first set 6-3, then falling in the 2nd set 4-6. With the match decided, it was agreed upon to play a 10 point tie breaker as the decider instead of a 3rd set. Alex and Cooper regained their aggressive play to win 10-7. "This is a very solid doubles team. The skill sets of Alex and Cooper complement each other very well. Alex brings a calm and patient demeanor to the court, a great asset in playing doubles as each player is responsible for their own emotions but also are tasked with supporting their teammate. Alex over the years has brought this ability to play hard and work hard to get better, all with staying positive and supportive of his teammates. The value of this disposition cannot be overstated." Coach Mattern Two doubles was also a great match. Wabash, Ashton Coffman and TJ Fritter, took set one with a solid 6-2 win. The tide turned in set two, Elwood found some consistency and energy to bounce back and take the set in a 7 point tie breaker 7-6. True to the match, a 10 point tie breaker was played, in "overtime" Wabash took the match by winning the tie breaker 12-10. "Both boys played strong in set 1 and in the tie breaker. TJ has become a very consistent performer for us at both JV singles and Varsity 2 doubles. TJ has been a 4 year tennis player and has been through some lean years in reference to wins and losses. To see TJ, who himself wasn't sure where he would fit in with this year's lineup, helping us to win at the varsity level serves as an example to our team. Finish what you start and contribute where you can, and lastly enjoy the journey." Coach Mattern In JV action, Wabash may have had the most anticipated match of the evening, an inter squad match that lived up to it's billing in good tennis and competitive play. Featuring senior Nick Perkins and Senior Spencer Stout. The last match of the evening to finish, Nick Perkins took the match in 3 sets. Coach Mattern shared "This was a great match to watch for all. It was so tightly contested that it finished under the lights. This was a great match, highlighted by the fact that the entire team was supporting both seniors shot by shot as they finished up. The atmosphere was great for the end of the match, providing both athletes with an excellent and well deserved senior night." Also in JV action, Cael McCann, Dylan Pence, and TJ Tracy competed in inter squad competition. Wabash Travels to Peru on Wednesday for a TRC matchup
