Rutherford and H. Haag pair up to earn first place honors at the Danville Hokum Karem

The Western Boone high school cross country team competed at the Danville Hokum Karem on Saturday. The race was a two-person relay covering a total of six miles, with up to five pairs competing for each school and three pairs scoring. In an exciting girls race, the Lady Stars' pair of Hannah Haag and Katheryn Rutherford exchanged the lead multiple times with Lebanon's top pair. Going into the final leg, Haag came through with a small lead, and Rutherford held onto it over the final mile to win in a time of 38:23.14. Their first-place finish was the first-ever win by a Western Boone girls pair at this meet, and their cumulative time was the fastest girls time in school history. The pair of Bailey Haag and Samantha Jones was next for Western Boone in 8th in 41:34.00, and the pair of Emily Parsons and Charlotte Stucky was the final pair to score for the team in 15th in 43:43.99. Also running for the Lady Stars were the pairs of Janelle Gearheart and Kate Higer (20th in 48:52.19) and Rosie Rogers and Bailey Keyes (25th in 50:48.53). As a team, the Lady Stars earned a second-place finish with 19 points. Lebanon won with 13 points. In the boys race, the pair of Carter Hanna and Isaac Threlkeld led the way for Western Boone in 20th in 36:04.29. Luke LaGrange and Lane Hardee were 28th in 37:28.51, and Graham Cavins and Levi LaGrange were 30th in 39:00.81. Also running for the Stars were the pairs of Alex Crockett and Brayden Schick (38th in 44:41.24) and Xander Rouse and Jude Balke (40th in 46:14.34). The Stars' boys team was 8th with 73 points. Greenfield-Central won with 16 points. In the open 2-mile race, Brawn Puckett finished 15th in 14:28.72. Cara Hanna earned 4th among female finishers in 17:08.40, while sister Carli Hanna was the 7th female finisher in 18:30.47. Katherine Mateika was the 17th female finisher in 22:17.65. The Stars will compete in the Leap Into September Invitational at Southmont on Tuesday.
