Tuesday evening produced an extremely exciting baseball game between the Athenians of Crawfordsville and your Stars’ Varsity. The Stars came away with a 2-1 victory to upset the previously undefeated in conference Crawfordsville ball club. Bryce Kopriva pitched and earned his 4th consecutive conference win in four tries. The senior right hander threw a complete game and allowed the 1 run by spreading out 5 hits and stacking up 7 strike outs. Outfielders Marcum, Grimes, and Velazquez showed great effort all evening and demonstrated great fundamentals with their routes to a few tough fly balls. The middle infield duo of Hawkins and Howe were busy all evening and kept all the action they could in front of them. The team played a clean game defensively and had 0 errors. Offensively, Carter Marcum lead with two hits against a great Crawfordsville pitcher who will be throwing for Purdue next season. After five innings the stars trailed 1-0. In the sixth, Gavin Hawkins hustled his way on base after a ball he hit hard skirted away from the Athenian shortstop. Jackson Grimes came to the plate next and he and Hawkins executed a hit and run to perfection allowing Hawkins to score and putting Grimes at second. Two batters later, and with two strikes, Luke Jackson drove a ball off of the center field wall that scored Grimes. The two runs were enough for Kopriva to finish the game and the team to leave Crawfordsville with a 2-1 victory! The Stars are in action every night this week and will host Crawfordsville for the Sagamore Conference series finale. The Webo JV Stars fell to the Crawfordsville Athenians JV team 9-4 on Tuesday. The Stars got on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning after Layton Yancey singled, and Jackson Long hit into a Fielder’s choice each scoring 1 run. An error by the Athenians in the bottom of the 3rd inning gave the Stars a 3-2 lead. Kahne Reid, Evan Kiplinger, Long, Luke Cummins, Cale Scagnoli, and Yancey each collected 1 hit for the Webo JV team. Long and Yancey each drove in 1 run and Scagnoli stole 2 bases. Defensively, Owen Oakley also turned a double play. The Stars committed 7 errors and gave the Athenians 4 unearned runs and that ultimately was the deciding factor in the game.
