On Monday, December 12, 2022, the Western Boone Wrestling team entered the den of the Tri-West Bruins. The Stars fought hard and emerged victorious, defeating Tri-West 48-27. Webo won seven of the ten contested matches. The wrestlers improved their team record to nine wins and just four losses. The varsity match-up started at the 170 pound weight class, where Trevor Weakley continued his unbeaten season (12-0). Weakley needed a mere 24 seconds to secure the pin and get Western Boone on the scoreboard first, 6-0. At 182lbs, Ethan Williams went the distance, but came up short, losing 8-3. Tri-West then received a forfeit at 195lbs. After that, Wyatt Dickey (220) made his first appearance this season, returning from a football injury. Unfortunately, Dickey succumbed to his opponent via first period fall, giving Tri-West, the early lead, 6-15. At 285lbs, Joshua Dickey avenged his brother’s loss, by quickly pinning his opponent in 27 seconds. Next, Isaac Moore (106) continued to show improvement, securing a solid 8-4 decision over his opponent, and bringing the team score to a tie, 15-15. Tri-West received a forfeit at 113lbs, followed by a second period pin over Webo’s Isaiah Garland, to regain their lead, 15-27. That would prove to be the last time, the Bruins were able to score any points, though. Noah Starks (126) received a forfeit. Then Trey Fuston (132) returned from being ill, to tie things back up at 27, with a solid pin over his opponent in the first period. Kameron Mikesell (138), then received a forfeit. At 145lbs, Mason Adams put together a solid performance, dominating his opponent in the first period, before securing the fall just under one minute into the second period. Evan Trent (152) quickly took down his opponent in the first period of his match, and put together a tough ride, to keep him down for the remainder of the period. Half-way through the second period, Trent pinned his opponent, bringing the Stars’ lead to 18 (45-27), and assuring the team victory. In the final varsity bout of the evening, Andrew Manthey (160) had an exciting battle with an enthusiastic opponent. At the end of the second period, Manthey trailed 1-3. Manthey managed to stay calm in the third period, and took advantage of an unnecessary roughness penalty against Tri-West and a hard fought escape to tie the score, 3-3, with just a minute to go in the match. Manthey got a takedown with 25 seconds left and then turned his opponent on his back with 10 seconds left to secure the comeback victory. The wrestling team will be back in action on Saturday, December 17, when they travel to New Castle to participate in a team duals event. Wrestling will start at 9:00am.
