On Saturday, January 14, 2023, the Western Boone wrestling team traveled to North Montgomery to compete in the Sagamore Conference Championship. The team competed well and earned their highest place finish in years, grabbing runner-up honors. Only Lebanon finished with more points. Lincoln Rose (126) placed 7th. Jacob Smith (160) and Joshua Dickey (285) each placed fifth. Jacob Smith defeated Southmont’s Max Musick to earn the first varsity win of his career. Isaiah Garland (120) showed much improvement and managed to place fourth. Isaac Moore (106) had to wrestle a familiar opponent for third place. Earlier that day, Moore lost to Crawfordsville’s Koyanagi, but he was able to avenge the loss in the consolation finals and capture third place. Wyatt Dickey (220) lost a close initial match to the eventual conference runner-up, before making quick work of his next three opponents, pinning each in under one minute and capturing 3rd place. The highlight of the day featured seven Western Boone Wrestlers advancing to the championship match. Jacob Anderson (113), Trey Fuston (132), Kameron Mikesell (138), Mason Adams (145), Evan Trent (152), Trevor Weakley (170) and Ethan Williams (182) each wrestled their way into the finals. Unfortunately, Anderson, Fuston, and Mikesell each succumbed to pins by their opponents. Trent lost in an extremely close match, 2-3. Mason Adams faced Lebanon’s Zach Tranum in his championship bout. Adams struck first with a takedown in the first period. In the second period, Tranum was able to get an escape and a takedown, causing Adams to trail briefly 2-3. A reversal by Adams put him back in the lead 4-3 going into the third period. Adams avoided some precarious positions in the third period before reversing Tranum to his back for five points and nearly getting a pin, before time expired. Adams won his second career conference title 9-3. Trevor Weakley continued his domination over Sagamore Conference foes, pinning his first opponent of the day in a mere 31 seconds. In his semi-final match, Weakley took a little longer, but still only need 42 seconds to dispatch his opponent from Lebanon. Weakley faced off against Danville’s Gabriel Williams in the finals. Though it was Weakley’s longest match of the day, Weakley left no doubt that he was going to be the champion, pinning Williams in just 55 seconds. The title is Weakley’s third conference championship. At 182 pounds, Ethan Williams performed well all day and earned his way to his first ever championship appearance. Ethan won his first two matches by first period pin to advance to the finals. In the final match, Williams faced returning conference champion, Nelson Honore, from Frankfort. Honore came ready to defend his title and earned the first takedown. Williams wasted no time though and quickly earned an escape and a takedown of his own. Williams then placed Honore on his back and pinned him with 49 seconds remaining in the first period. The pin gave Williams his first conference title. The wrestlers will compete in their final two dual meets of the season this week. On Tuesday (1/17/2023), the Stars will host the Gophers of Clinton Prairie for senior night. On Thursday (1/19/2023), Western Boone will host the Lebanon Tigers. Thursday evening will also be youth night. The elementary aged club wrestlers for both Lebanon and Western Boone will face each other in a series of friendly match-ups. Western Boone’s junior high team will also open their season with a match-up against Clinton Central. The evening will be capped off with the varsity dual between Lebanon and Western Boone.
