The 8th Girls Basketball team traveled to Southmont Monday night expecting a physical contest. They were not disappointed. The stars racked up twenty team fouls in a back and forth game. The Mounties full court pressure jumped them out to an early 6-5 first quarter lead. In a defensive battle, buckets were few and far between. The Stars were able to break the press, but just could not get shots to fall the whole first half. Southmont maintained a 13-10 lead at the half. After a Technical Foul on the Southmont bench, Estelle Walker calmly connected on both free throws and jump started the Stars offense to begin the second half. Lyla Kinsler, Ashton Pelley and Candace Paris all connected on field goals in the quarter giving the stars a 22-19 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Free throw shooting and fouls plagued the Stars in the fourth quarter. Ultimately, this game came down to who was going to hit their free throws. The Mounties hit four of eight in the final quarter vs the Stars only connecting on two of nine. Southmont came away with the win with a final score of 29-28. Western Boone was led in scoring by Paris with nine, Kinsler with eight and Pelley chipped in six. The Stars travel to Tri-West this evening.
