On Saturday, January 28, 2023, the Western Boone varsity wrestlers competed in the first leg of the state tournament, the sectional at Crawfordsville High School. The team fought hard and walked away with runner-up status, their best finish in years. Webo had three individual champions and advance 10 of 13 wrestlers on to the regional tournament next week. Isaac Moore (106), Jacob Smith (160), and Wyatt Dickey (220) each went 2-2 for the day, capturing 4th place and advancing to regionals. Jacob Anderson (113), Trey Fuston (132), Kameron Mikesell (138), and Ethan Williams (182) each won three matches and only lost one to place third and also advance in the tournament. Western Boone had three wrestlers, Mason Adams (145), Evan Trent (152), and Trevor Weakley (170) make it to the championship match, and all three put together dominating performances to capture sectional titles. Mason Adams started the day on a high note, breaking the 32-year-old single season pin record (previously set at 27) with a first period pin over his first opponent of the day. Mason went on to pin his semi-final opponent in the first period as well. Adams’ championship match was against a previously unbeaten (30-0) opponent from North Vermillion. Mason was able to hand him his first loss of the season with a first period pin, bringing Mason’s pin total to 30 for the season. Evan Trent was sectional champion as a freshman, and now as a senior, he has duplicated the feat. Evan won his first match of the day by first period fall. He then went the distance in his semi-final match, but still won in convincing fashion, 9-3. In his championship match, Trent put together a series of dominating offensive moves to earn a victory by technical fall in the third period. Trevor Weakley was also able to capture his 2nd sectional title and make it look easy along the way. Weakley started off with a first period pin to advance to the semi-finals. In his semi-final match, Weakley needed just 1 minute and 17 seconds to pin his opponent and advance to the championship. Weakley’s championship match was against a Zionsville opponent who had managed to upset Weakley earlier in the season. Weakley showcased his confidence and determination this time and exacted his revenge with a first period fall. The wrestlers will spend the weekend recuperating and the next week preparing to compete in the regional round of the state tournament at North Montgomery. Wrestling will start at 9:00am on February 4, 2023.
