INDIANAPOLIS - It wasn't the dream ending she had hoped for, but it was still a fantastic end to a prep career for Western Boone senior Leelah Fettig on Saturday afternoon at the IHSAA State Finals. The Star diver placed 10th in the state in diving with a score of 390.95 - both improvements from a year ago. "I feel like for the most part I had a pretty good meet," Fettig said. "The last rounds didn't go quite as I hoped, but I feel like I did pretty well." Fettig was in the top-10 throughout the day. She was 10th after round one, then ninth after round 2. In round 3, she scored a 37.95 moving her into fifth place. She dropped to seventh after round 4, and was ninth after rounds 5, 6 and 7. In the eighth round, she landed another solid dive to improve to seventh. After a break to start the swimming, the top-16 divers came back for their final dives. After a 35.70 on her ninth dive, she scored a 25.6 on her 10th - which dropped her to 11th overall and needing to make up some ground. "My back dive pike (her 10th dive) is one I want to have back," Fettig said. "I have worked a lot on cleaning that dive up in the past year and I got out there I just messed it up." Fettig recovered with an impressive final dive, scoring a 44.80 - her best dive of the day. She ended up a little more than three points behind the eighth and final podium spot, but she was happy that she did what she could to give herself a chance at the podium. "I was happy with that being my last dive today," Fettig said. Saturday marked the end of what was a very successful high school diving career for Fettig, who will continue her career at Ball State. She started diving as a sixth grader, and didn't realize her potential until the start of last year. Fettig leaves Western Boone as a two-time conference and sectional champion, and as a two-time state finalist. "I had a great experience at WeBo," Fettig said. "Getting to go to state twice was amazing, and I am happy I was able to break the school records and winning conference and sectionals was awesome. All my teammates were great and so supportive." Lady Stars end season at State Finals INDIANAPOLIS – Another fantastic season came to an end for the Western Boone girls swimming team on Friday night at the IHSAA State Finals. The Stars came in with three events competing in the prelims, and they all swam well in their final races of the year. “It was a really good end to the season,” Western Boone head coach Hayley Eadie said. “It can be hard coming here because we put so much focus into the sectional, so this is kind of an extension of that. It can be hard for the girls, put I am really proud of them. They gave it their best and it is a lot of fun out here.” In the 200-IM, junior Arianna Stieber placed second in her heat in a time of 2:12.54. That was good for 26th overall. Stieber matched her place from a year ago. In the 100-back, Stieber was third in her heat in a time of 1:00.59. She placed 27th for the second-straight year. “I know she wanted to try and place better, but it’s hard to ever be disappointed with how she does,” Eadie said. “She is a standout and we are so proud of everything she has done this year. Next year we may switch it up a little because we have a lot of ideas of where we can put her and there is a little less team pressure, but I am so proud of her and she did a great job.” The Stars finished the day with the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Katherine Aliff, Rashel Anderson, Adelaide Jones and Stieber. They originally finished in a time of 3:42.82, but where DQ'd after the race for a bad exchange. “That was such a strong relay for us this year,” Eadie said. “We are going to miss the two seniors, but we have a lot of ideas of how we can put together a strong relay next year. It was a great group of girls.” The Lady Stars cap a fantastic season that saw them win the Sagamore Conference and sectional titles. Eadie said it was a special group. “I am so proud of this team,” Eadie said. “This group was a lot of fun, but it wasn’t easy. This group stands out for the way they stepped up to the challenge and rose to the occasion. Every single one of them stepped up when we needed them too.” Will Willems is the Sports Editor of the Lebanon Reporter. Follow him on Twitter @Will_Willems.
