Hawkins records 100th hit; Nance 50th Win at Loeb Stadium

The Western Boone baseball team made it six wins in their last seven games with a double-header sweep of Clinton Central at Loeb Stadium in Lafayette on Saturday. During the wins, the Stars collected a few noteworthy milestones. First, senior Gavin Hawkins led off the opening game with a single, his 100th hit of his career. Hawkins is hitting .426 on the year and has 29 hits after Saturday. The second milestone was for head coach Michael Nance, who picked up his 50th career victory during the double-header sweep. The Stars have improved their win total in each of his first three seasons, going from 5 wins to 13 to 18 last year. Western Boone is currently 14-9. In game one, the Stars struck first, getting a sac fly from Ethan Nance and a run-scoring ground out from Jack Mallory to make it 2-0. Nance's RBI-single made it 3-0 in the third, but Clinton Central scored twice in the fifth to make it a 3-2 game. freestar Nance drove in his third run of the game with a sac fly in the fifth to make it 4-2, and the Stars pulled away in the sixth. A two-out error kept the inning alive, and after a single from Kahne Reid, Hawkins hit a double to make it 5-2. Quinn Westerfeld hit a 2-run single to make it 7-2, and Mallory added a 2-run single to make it 9-2 later in the inning. Westerfeld was 4-for-4 with four runs scored. Hawkins and Reid each had two hits. Levi Stewart allowed two runs on five hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out three. The Stars dominated the second game. Just like game one, Nance and Mallory drove in first inning runs to make it 2-0. Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the second, Reid tripled and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1. The Stars then blew the game open with a 6-run third and added four more in the fourth to end the game in five innings. freestar Westerfeld went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Mallory had two hits and Cale Scagnoli drove in two runs. Brennan Kopriva got the winning, pitching four innings and allowing one run on two hits. The Stars will play Southmont in a double-header at Southmont on Monday evening.
