Stars drop close one to the Red Devils of Pike in varsity baseball

The Stars Varsity Baseball team traveled to Pike Saturday to face the Red Devils. Pike ended up with a 6-5 victory. Pike lead most of the game 3-1 after the Stars defense again allowed three unearned runs early in the contest. While errors have been an unwanted theme most nights, so has grit to try and fight back late. This was the case again Saturday when in the fifth inning the Stars scored four runs lead by a bases load double off the left center wall by Owen Kiplinger. Jackson Grimes pitched for the Stars and threw extremely well giving up only 1 earned run on just 3 hits in five innings. Freshmen Layton Yancey got the ball again at the end of a close game as he has proven himself trustworthy for big moments early in his baseball career. Yancey came through and delivered two good innings on the mound. In the end, a couple of over aggressive offensive and defensive calls from the dugout were the difference. The Stars don’t have time to sulk as they’re scheduled to play four really tough games this week if the weather cooperates. The boys start at home Monday against University and end the week with three conference games, two against Lebanon and one against Tri-West.
