It wasn't an ideal start for the Western Boone football team on Friday night when they hosted Tri-West in the season opener. The Bruins jumped out to a 21-0 lead and the Stars couldn't claw back, falling 35-7. "It's different for sure," Western Boone head coach Justin Pelley said. "A team like Tri-West, you don't know what they are going to do with a new coordinator and we are doing some of the stuff we have done for 12-13 years. It's what we do and we hang our hat on it. We're typically pretty proud of it, but they put us in our place tonight." Western Boone did have chances throughout the game. They forced a turnover on Tri-West's opening possession, but gave it back three plays later with an interception, leading to the Bruins first touchdown. The Bruins scored on their next two drives to go up 21-0. But Western Boone came back, capping off a 14-play, 72-yard drive, scoring on a 1-yard run by Jake Smith. The Stars then got a stop, but couldn't capitalize before the half. The Stars got the second half kick-off, but were forced to punt, and couldn't cash in on a blocked put midway through the third quarter either after getting the ball inside the Tri-West 40. 'It's just being consistent," Pelley said. "We show glimpses in practice too. We just aren't in good shape right now. We got to our fourth and fifth running back and our fourth and fifth wide receivers tonight. We rotated a couple of quarterbacks on purpose, and we were rotating a lot of guys on defense. It's because we aren't in shape right now and that's our fault." Jake Smith led the way with 30 yards rushing and the WeBo touchdown. The Stars hit the road to face Lebanon next Friday. "We have to look in the mirror this week," Pelley said. "It starts with our coaches and works its way down. We are going to play kids that are hungry, want to play and kids that can be consistent and know what we are doing." Will Willems is the Sports Editor of the Lebanon Reporter. The Stars started the game by stuffing the Bruins on 4th and short as Noah Baird and Rolen Shue combined on a tackle for loss on Tri-West's first possession. After a three-and-out on Tri-West's next possession, the Stars took the ball and marched down the field on a long scoring drive. It was highlighted by solid offensive line play, hard running by Kane Jackson, converting two 4th down plays, including a 4th and 12 scramble by quarterback Tyson Riner, and capped it off with a sweep around the right side by Colton Mitchell. Tyson Riner added a two-point conversion. After trading possessions, the Stars went on the march again. More solid blocking up front led to a Lukas Shirley touchdown, and it was 14-0 at the half. Cale Scagnoli took the second half kickoff all the way back for a touchdown, and Lukas Shirley tacked on a 2-point conversion. Just like that, is was 22-0. The final score came when Lukas Shirley tipped a screen pass to himself and managed to take it all the way to the endzone. Several Stars had great days on the defensive side of the ball as they did not allow a single Bruin first down until less than a minute remained in the third quarter. The Stars were up 28-0 before Tri-West was able to put up a few late scores in the 4th quarter. In addition to Shirley's pick six, the Stars had interceptions by Dane Allen and Jaxsyn Mathews. Noah Baird, Dean Bolen, and Rolen Shue also had excellent defensive efforts for the Webo defense.
