The Stars Varsity and JV baseball teams played in Lizton Saturday, taking on conference opponent Tri-West. The Varsity played first, and lost 15-1. Freshmen Brennan Kopriva made his Varsity debut and composed himself well, holding the Bruins scoreless through the first inning and the Stars lead 1-0. In the second inning Tri-West made an adjustment and found success against Kopriva’s fastball, stringing together multiple hits and scoring 8 runs. Kopriva came out late in the third inning and another freshmen, Layton Yancey took over on the bump. Yancey threw strikes but the Bruin offense wasn’t cooled and they eventually hit their way to 15 earned runs. The Stars defense committed zero errors for only the second time this season, something they need to continue to build on as they turn the page on what’s been a very rough week. Luke Jackson lead the offense as the Junior Captain went 3 for 3 raising his conference batting average to .562. Freshmen Jake Smith was called upon to pinch hit for the third game in a row, and for the third time delivered a base hit, earning him the DH spot for Monday’s game at Clinton Prairie. The JV game went much like the Varsity with Tri-West putting up more hits than the Stars could handle. Jake Smith and Hunter Brose worked together as the pitchers for the game. Great defensive plays came from Rutherford, Kraus, Wirey, Walker, and Cummins. Smith lead the offense with a triple over the left fielder’s head. Final score was 11-3 but the JV did a good job fighting and are getting better each day.
