Coming off a walk-off win over Danville on Tuesday, the Western Boone softball team was looking to finish off the sweep on Wednesday afternoon at Danville. The Stars did just that, jumping out to an early lead and beating the Warriors 8-2. The win improved the Stars to 8-5 and 6-2 in the Sagamore Conference. The Stars carried the momentum over from Tuesday’s win, getting four runs in the first inning. With two on and two out, Morganne Grant drove in a run with a single to make it 1-0. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Kale Conner reached with an infield hit, before Dottie Wilson’s 2-run single made it 4-0. The teams matched runs in the third and fourth innings, with Western Boone scoring on an error and an RBI-triple by Gabby Lewis. Conner and Wilson added RBIs in the seventh to seal the win. Emily Conyer and Conner were each 3-for-4 in the game. Emma Shirley and Wilson each had two hits. Lewis allowed two runs on five hits in seven innings. The Stars travel to Clinton Central Thursday. “I think this gives the girls confidence in the way they played,” Vanderpool said. “We have been playing well and we are getting more and more confident as we beat some of these strong teams.” Over on the baseball diamond, the Stars lost game two of the series 3-1. Down 2-0 in the fourth, WeBo got a run on a Jake Smith ground out. But Danville added an insurance run and held on from there. Marcum, Jackson, Eli Duncan and Jackson Grimes had hits for the Stars. Grimes took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) in six innings. He struck out nine. The Stars baseball team is now 6-9 and travels to Cascade.
