Western Boone’s Varsity Baseball team hosted the the Athenians from Crawfordsville on Tuesday night. The Athenians came in as the 8th ranked team in Indiana’s class 3A. The Stars got rained out Monday which allowed for an evening of preparation which paid off huge as the Stars earned a 5-4 victory. Logan Walker started the game on the mound in his first ever conference start. Logan did exactly what he was asked and stifled the Athenians for four innings, allowing 0 earned runs. Jackson Grimes earned the win by throwing innings 5-7 and retiring 9 out of the last 10 batters he faced. The Stars didn’t play a perfect game of defense but for the first time since their opening night were able to never make more than one error in the same inning. Cole Wiley made a huge defensive play late by backing up an errant throw and subsequently picking off a Crawfordsville runner trying to get an extra base. Luke Jackson lead the offense by going 2 for 2 and also walking to reach base in all of his at bats. Jackson Grimes contributed on both sides of the ball by hitting a triple that scored two runs and gave the Stars the lead. Crawfordsville scored late on an error to tie the game. The Stars never flinched and Owen Kiplinger put a ball in play in the bottom of the sixth to get the Stars the lead. Overall this was a team win. Pitching, defense, and timely hitting were the recipe for success. The Stars travel to Crawfordsville Wednesday for the second half of the conference week before hosting Hamilton Heights Friday.
