On Wednesday the Stars Varsity baseball team headed to Crawfordsville for the second game of this week’s Sagamore Conference series. The Athenians earned the split by winning 10-6. Western Boone continued their upward trend with another good defensive outing as well as staying very aggressive at the plate. Freshman Brennan Kopriva started on the mound and held the Athenians scoreless through two innings. Inning three was rough for the Stars due to multiple walks and one of the two errors that were made in the game – by the time the Stars got back to the dugout they had relinquished the lead and trailed 4-2. Late in the game another freshman, Luke Cummins took the mound for two terrific innings of work. The Stars kept battling and ended by scoring a total of 6 earned runs in the contest against Crawfordsville’s Cale Coursey. Coursey, an all-conference pitcher a year ago, had only given up 6 total runs in his first 7 starts of the season. Hitting was lead by Hawkins, Jackson, and Kiplinger who each recorded two hits. The Stars have started to show that they can win on any night. On Wednesday the Stars didn’t win but they continued to fight hard for seven innings and continued to prove to themselves that they can play with anyone in the conference when they execute as they are capable. The Stars are off Thursday and will have their weekly campus run during practice to try and burn off some lactic acid before hosting Hamilton Heights on Friday night.
