On Tuesday evening the Stars Varsity Baseball team traveled to the Gem City to take on Frankfort in a Sagamore Conference match up. The game was either enthralling or incredibly boring for the first six innings and that is all dependent on your opinion of a true pitching duel. Frankfort started their ace, J. Lopez and he proved why he starts the first conference game each week by holding the Stars hitless through the first six innings. However, the Stars have a guy too and Jackson Grimes was equally electric! Grimes pitched a complete game shut out allowing just two hits and throwing only 83 pitches. The outing was without question the most efficient and just overall the best performance of Grimes’ career. Grimes had incredible help from his defense all evening. Grimes had two strike outs and a pick off, the other 18 outs in the game were made by the guys behind Grimes. Cole Wiley made a terrific throw in the middle of the game to keep a Hot Dog out of scoring position. Carter Marcum and Luke Wirey never allowed a ball to hit the outfield grass. Owen Kiplinger and Bryce Kopriva both made spectacular running catches during the contest. There was very little offense to talk about from either team through the first six full innings. In the top of the seventh, with two outs, Cole Wiley drew a walk, Blake Miller entered to run for Wiley. Marco Velazquez advanced Miller to second on an infield single which was the Stars first hit of the game. Jackson Grimes then singled in the infield as well. Marco Velazquez briefly found himself in a pickle after overrunning second base. However, he kept his cool and started a run down which allowed Miller to head for home. In the commotion the Hot Dog shortstop attempted to get Miller out at the plate but made an errant throw which allowed both Miller and Velazquez to score! In the bottom half of the inning Grimes went out simply finished his mission by retiring three batters after allowing only the Hot Dogs second hit of the game. The Stars have now won four of their last five and improved their regular season win total to 10 games for the first time in at least 15 years. The guys are not content, they are playing well and have big goals for the next few weeks. Thursday the Hot Dogs come to Webo and will certainly be looking to split the series, the Stars will be ready for the fight. Saturday Clinton Central comes to the house for a double header before the final week of the regular season starts next Monday.
