DANVILLE - This year's Sagamore Conference Meet is a little different. With the threat of poor weather on Friday, the conference moved up the field events to Thursday night. Both Lebanon and Western Boone got off to solid starts on day one of the meet, claiming multiple champions. For Lebanon, they claimed three titles on the boys side and scored with seven of their nine competitors. "All our kids stepped up - on both the boys and girls sides," Lebanon head coach Shelley West said. "They all played their parts and done well." Lebanon started the day off with a 1-2 finish in the boys long jump. Trey Ries was the conference champion with a jump of 21-feet-9-inches. Kaden Lark was right behind with a jump of 21-feet-1.25-inches. Lark later won the high jump with a personal best jump of 6-feet-6-inches. "We know we needed to score double points in as many events as we can," West said. "They both filled that role today and had great jumps." The Tigers third champion came from Mason Crew in the discus. He threw 138-11 inches. Nabih Soumah was fourth with a throw of 136-feet-6-inches. Soumah was second in the shot put with a throw of 48-feet-10.5-inches, with Crew placing fourth with a throw of 43-feet-8.5-inches. "Coming in, Mason wasn't seeded first in the discus," West said. "He had a good shot put and that gave him a good boost heading into the discus. He had a great throw right off the bat." For the WeBo boys, Chase Richwine had the best finish, placing fifth in the high jump - clearing 5-8. Jaxson Gott was sixth in the discus with a throw of 116-feet-9-inches and Wyatt Dickey was sixth in the shot put with a throw 40-feet-6-inches. Through five events, Lebanon leads with 56 points, with Danville second with 43. Western Boone is sixth with 10. The Tigers were 17 points ahead of projection based on seeds, with Danville six points below projection. For the girls, Western Boone claimed two titles and scored seven of their nine competitors. "We had several athletes have PRs tonight, a couple first place finishes and some really close battles for other spots," Western Boone head coach Nate Birk said. "I am really excited for tomorrow after today's finishes." Katheryn Rutherford won the pole vault on Thursday night. She cleared 10-feet-3-inches. She was the lone competitor to clear anything above 9-feet-3-inches. "She's been a rockstar for us," Birk said. "She is one of our leaders and is a three-time captain. She has fantastic work ethic, she works hard in the weight room and the other kids look up to her. It's great to have her." Western Boone's other champion came in the discus, when Emmy Roys threw 117-feet-9-inches. Roys was second in the shot put with a throw of 35-feet-10-inches, with Kennedy Kiger placing third in 33-feet-8-inches. "Emmy has been a rock for us all year as well, and has been scoring a lot of points for us," Birk said. "For her to have that performance in the disc wasn't anything shocking, but for her it's always good to win the conference title." Ki'erra Koch was second in the long jump, going 16-feet-10.75 inches. Becca Keyes was eighth in 15-feet-0.75-inches. Emmerson Gott was seventh in the high jump, clearing 4-6. For Lebanon, Ciarra Hiatt was third in the pole vault, clearing 9-feet. Jocelyn Butler was fourth in 8-feet-6-inches. In the high jump, Sydnie Starkey tied for third, clearing 4-feet-8-inches. Claire Boling was fifth, clearing 4-feet-6-inches. Carley Adams was fifth in the shot put, throwing 29-feet-2-inches, and Jesuoteme Soteria was eighth with a throw of 27-feet-8.50-inches. Grace Ann Merchant was third in the discus with a throw of 96-feet. Gabby Deakins was eighth with a throw of 79-feet-07. Through five events, Western Boone leads with 45 points. Danville is second with 43 and Lebanon is third with 32.5. Western Boone and Danville are each one point below projection based on seeds, while Lebanon is 4.5 ahead. Both coaches said the results from Thursday should help the group on Friday. "Especially for some of our younger athletes, this will give them some confidence for tomorrow," Birk said. "We can focus on our running events and set our journey for the rest of the meet." West had similar sentiments. "This group has been great leaders," West said. "They have all bought in with great attitudes, ready to have a great night." Will Willems is the Sports Editor of the Lebanon Reporter. Follow him on Twitter @Will_Willems.
