Stars sweep Mounties in varsity softball

An early lead helped Western Boone Varsity Stars defeat Southmont Varsity Mounties 13-3 on Tuesday. Western Boone Varsity Stars scored on a single by Emily Conyer, a walk by Morganne Grant, a single by Dottie Wilson, and a single by Kirstin McCormick in the first inning. Western Boone Varsity Stars secured the victory thanks to seven runs in the sixth inning. Western Boone Varsity Stars batters contributing to the big inning included Gabby Lewis, Grant, Kale Conner, Wilson, McCormick, and Emma Shirley, all sending runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning. After Southmont Varsity Mounties scored one run in the top of the third, Western Boone Varsity Stars answered with one of their own. Southmont Varsity Mounties scored when Chelsea Veatch hit a solo homer. Western Boone Varsity Stars then answered when an error scored one run for Western Boone Varsity Stars. Western Boone Varsity Stars tallied seven runs in the sixth inning. The big inning was thanks to an error on a ball put in play by Lewis, Conner, and McCormick, singles by Grant and Shirley, and a groundout by Wilson. Lewis led the Western Boone Varsity Stars to victory on the rubber. The bulldog allowed nine hits and three runs over six innings, striking out four. Haley Scott took the loss for Southmont Varsity Mounties. Scott lasted five and a third innings, allowing four hits and four runs. Veatch started the game for Southmont Varsity Mounties. The pitcher allowed four runs on two hits Western Boone Varsity Stars had nine hits in the game. Mickayla Naanos, Shirley, and McCormick each collected multiple hits for Western Boone Varsity Stars. McCormick, Shirley, and Naanos all had two hits to lead Western Boone Varsity Stars. Western Boone Varsity Stars didn't commit a single error in the field. Naanos had eight chances in the field, the most on the team.
