Vernon High School in Fortville. It’s the ninth season that the Irish are competing in Class 5A, previously winning four state titles and compiling a 31-4 record. The Marauders are playing in 5A for the first time in school history – moving up this year due to increased enrollment. Cathedral, the recipient of a first-round tournament bye, finished the regular season two weeks ago with a 38-16 victory over Akron Archbishop Hoban. Xavier Dangerfield rushed for 126 yards and scored three touchdowns – two on runs and the third on an 86-yard kickoff return. The Irish defense forced three turnovers on the way to a third consecutive Fighting Irish victory. Mt. Vernon advanced to the sectional semi-final round with a 34-18 win last Friday over Greenfield-Central. The Marauders gained 309 yards on the ground as they defeated the Cougars for the second time this season. Quarterback Mason Meyer rushed for 151 yards and four touchdowns. Meyer also completed four of seven passing attempts for 81 yards. Running back BJ Johnson ran 155 yards and the other touchdown, while making nine tackles on defense. Mt. Vernon has won four consecutive games to clinch a winning season after finishing 2025 with a winless 0-10 record. The Fighting Irish have won all five post-season games against the Marauders including a 41-7 Class 4A regional triumph in their last meeting in 2012.
