The Indiana High School Athletic Association has announced the sectional assignments for the 2025 football state tournament. After competing in Class 6A the past three years, the Fighting Irish have been reclassified under the IHSAA’s Success Factor to play in Class 5A for the next two postseasons. By enrollment, Cathedral is a Class 4A school. The Irish have been assigned to Sectional 13 along with Anderson, Plainfield, and New Palestine – which moves up to Class 5A after defeating East Noble to win the 4A state title last season. Potential Sectional 13 Opponents Anderson – The Indians were winless in ten games a year ago. Cathedral eliminated Anderson in the 2013 and 2014 sectionals on its way to winning Class 5A state titles. The Indians have lost their last seven postseason games and have never advanced beyond the sectional in the football tourney. New Palestine – The Dragons finished the 2024 season undefeated, 14-0, on their way to the school’s fourth football state championship. New Pal is expected to return Indiana Football Coaches Association 4A junior all-state quarterback Jacob Davis (1,949 passing yards, 23 TD) and IFCA junior all-state running back Josh Ranes (2,238 rushing yards, 30 TD). Cathedral and New Palestine have split four previous meetings in the tourney’s regional round with the winner of the last three games advancing to win a state title. Plainfield – The Quakers posted a 9-2 record last season with both losses coming against eventual 5A state champion Decatur Central. Cathedral has won eight of its nine all-time sectional meetings against Plainfield including the most recent matchup in 2021. Overall, Cathedral has played seven seasons in the 5A football state tournament. The Irish have compiled a 30-3 record – winning titles in 2013, 2014, 2020, and 2021.
