Indianapolis Cathedral opened the 2025 high school football season Friday night with a hard fought 8-0 victory over Ben Davis at Butler University. The Class 5A second-rated Fighting Irish have now won eight consecutive season-opening games, while the Giants have lost six of their last seven week one outings. Cathedral scored the game’s only points with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter when Cam Koers completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Owen Peterson in the front, right corner of the south end zone. Landon Hughes’ successful 2-point conversion run provided the final margin. The Irish defense kept the Giants’ offense from crossing the 50-yard line until the closing seconds of the first half, while intercepting four passes and holding BD to just 53 rushing yards for the night. It’s the first time that Ben Davis did not score in a game since being shut out at Warren Central in 2010. On offense, Koers completed 10 of 18 passes for 107 yards – connecting with six different receivers. Jimmy Pappas rushed for a career best 101 yards on 24 carries. Xavier Dangerfield added 72 yards on 21 rushing attempts. Cathedral travels to Class 6-A top-ranked and defending state champion Brownsburg Friday. The Bulldogs, ranked 49th nationally in the pre-season High School Football America poll, defeated the HSFA 35th rated Archbishop Spalding (Maryland) Cavaliers at home, 36-23, in week one. Brownsburg has won the previous two matchups with the Fighting Irish including a 30-14 victory in a weather-delayed, two-day affair last season.
