Cathedral lost at Brownsburg in high school football Friday night, 29-0, against the Class 6-A defending state champion and nationally ranked Bulldogs. It’s the first time the Irish have been shutout since losing at Center Grove 7-0 in 2015. Brownsburg took a 7-0 lead less than two minutes into the contest when quarterback Oscar Frye tossed a short pass to receiver Branden Sharpe, who then ran 46 yards for a touchdown. On the next possession, Frye connected with Sharpe for a 54-yard gain to the Irish 2-yard line. On third-and-goal from the one, Cathedral’s Caden Nelson forced and recovered a fumble on Frye’s QB sneak attempt. Brownsburg added to the lead late in the opening period when Shakovon Sumpterbey ran for an 8-yard score and Crew Brown rushed for a two-point conversion. In the second quarter, Frey completed a 5-yard scoring pass to Sumpterbey. In the closing seconds of the first half, the Bulldogs threatened to add to their 22-0 lead, but on third-and-goal from the 5-yard line, Tim Onghetich intercepted a Frey pass in the end zone. On the first play of the second half, Frey threw an 80-yard scoring strike to Sharpe. For its part, Cathedral’s defense managed a third goal-line stand early in the fourth quarter, keeping the Bulldogs out of the end zone on four plays inside the 8-yard line – the last of which was fourth-and-goal at the one. The Fighting Irish offense struggled to move the ball in the first half, running only four plays on the Bulldogs’ side of the 50-yard line. In the second half, the Irish advanced to Brownsburg’s 21-yard line twice but could not get any closer to scoring. Cathedral quarterback Cameron Koers completed 15 of 33 passes for 156 yards. Nate Van Vierzen caught six passes for 63 yards. Jimmy Pappas rushed for 50 yards on 12 attempts. Frey finished 16 of 30 for 260 yards and Sharpe snared eight passes for 237 yards. The Fighting Irish fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Bulldogs improve to 2-0 and move up to 32nd nationally in the High School Football America poll. Cathedral hosts Cincinnati St. Xavier Friday at The University of Indianapolis. The Bombers are 2-0 following victories over Lakota West and Centerville. The St. X defense, which features four Division I college recruits, is allowing opponents an average of just seven points and 124 yards per game this season.
