This was a solid season, a tone-setting season for a bright future. Youth was a big part of 2025 Cathedral High School girls golf, with an experienced team – with a boost from a seriously talented freshman – turning in a memorable season with postseason success and a foundation laid. “It was a great season,” Nick Jamell said. The Irish in Jamell’s third season as head coach turned in second-place finishes in the City Tournament and the Section 18 tournament in 2025, with freshman Mallory Jaske emerging as a front-line player for the present and future. Jaske, after winning the City title with a score of 74 at South Grove, shot 93 to finish third at the sectional tournament at Maple Creek Golf Club. “It was a great start to her career, for sure,” Jamell said. The Irish as a team shot 403 to finish as runner-up behind Bishop Chatard at the sectional, with Abby Mattingly shooting 100 followed by Maddy Turner at 101, Addie Pantzer at 109 and Katie Boggs at 114. Turner also medaled at the city tournament. It was a postseason that successfully capped the careers of core seniors while providing quality experience for returning players. “It was a great year and I think there's a lot moving forward,” Jamell said. “I kind of thought this might be a little bit of a building year, but we really ended up competing even better than I kind of expected.” Jamell called the sectional tournament “one of our better showings of the season,” another positive for the program’s future. “There were good, promising signs,” Jamell said. “We had people kicking it in gear right there. To end the season on a higher note was really good. There were no major struggles for any of the players, which is always good. The thing with golf is it’s like you're battling the course. If the last time you were on that course it was a huge struggle, that could be in your head. “Everyone played fairly well, so we can come back next year and build on that.” The Irish finished 10th at the regional meet at Lapel High School with a team score of 372. Jaske shot 84 to lead the Irish at the regional, with Turner shooting 94, Boggs shooting 95, Mattingly shooting 99 and Pantzer shooting 110. Jamell called Jaske’s overall performance as a freshman “awesome.” “It's a huge confidence booster for a freshman to do that,” Jamell said. “She struggled for what she expects for herself in regionals, but it was a tough day. Scoring for everybody was tough with the rain and the wind and the changing conditions all day long. “It's great to be able to have you know one of the younger players leading the team.” While recent Irish girls golf seasons featured more experienced teams, the 2025 season’s comparatively young team navigated the season capably. “I wasn't quite sure they would be with their game,” Jamell said. “We were kind of feeling it out. We were pretty hopeful as we got through and moving along that maybe we could make some headway and battle it out. “We didn't quite get [Chatard] this year, but next year we’re really hopeful.” The Irish graduate four seniors including Boggs and Pantzer, with Mattingly and Turner returning as seniors next season. Boggs in 2025 was a fourth-year senior who Jamell said “really picked up the game her freshman year.” “It took a lot of guts to stick with it,” Jamell said. “She really over the last few years and really this year stepped into a great leadership role. She pushed teammates to improve and work harder. She raised expectations and did a great job.” Jamell added of Pantzer, “She was very steady and sturdy in that five spot. We could always rely her if someone had a rough day.” They Irish also should return next season many sophomores and juniors who Jamell said will form the core of a strong team moving forward. “We have people who really made leaps and strides as relatively new golfers coming back as seniors and juniors who made huge improvements and were right there on the cusp of that Top 5,” Jamell said. “We’ll be really solid. We could be pretty top-heavy with a great sophomore there leading the charge. “We have a lot of high hopes for next year as well. It was a great season this season, but we’re hoping pushing for winning at city and sectionals next year will be a very achievable goal for us.”
