Volleyball Wins Inaugural IHSAA Sectional/Baseball Wins Region Invite/Golf Wins KV Invite/Tennis Places 2nd at Westfield

It was a busy and successful weekend for Lake Central spring sports, highlight by the boys' volleyball team winning the inaugural IHSAA Sectional Championship at Bishop Noll Institute. The varsity baseball team went 3-0 over the weekend to win the Region Invite hosted by both Lake Central and Munster. Also, boys' golf followed up a 4th place finish at the Uebele on Friday with a Championship at the Kankakee Valley Invite. Lastly, girls' tennis finished 2-1 overall for a 2nd place finish at the Shamrock Invite. Volleyball Sectionals at Bishop Noll Institute Semi Finals: LC 3 BNI 0 Set 1: 25-22 Set 2: 25-14 Set 3: 25-14 Final: LC 3 Illiana Christion 2 Set 1: 25-19 Set 2: 23-25 Set 3: 17-25 Set 4: 25-23 Set 5: 15-12 The Sectional Championship game against the Illiana Christian Vikings featured a great, exciting crowd and two of NWIs best volleyball teams. The match was back-and-forth all night. The Indians were dominant in the 1st set. Illiana Christian came back and took a close second set, and followed that up with a dominant 3rd to take a 2-1 lead. Lake Central won the the 4th to force a 5th set. Lake Central jumped out to a fast 4-0 lead in the decisive set and cruised from there to a 15-12 victory. This is the first sectional championship for boys' volleyball in its inaugural IHSAA season. Lake Central will now play in the Valparaiso Regional on Saturday. Their semi-final match-up will be against Boone Grove at 10AM. The other semi-final will feature Washington Township and Penn. The championship match is scheduled for 4PM. LC is 27-6 overall. They had a team score of 315, with two of our boys tying for first place medalist with a 77: Troy Howell and Tyler Morton. Also, Matthew Tuley got fourth place medalist with a score of 80. Individual Scores Carter McCall - 81 Tyler Morton - 77 Troy Howell - 77 Logan Carrol - 90 Matthew Tuley - 80 The Indians jump back into DAC play at home Tuesday and on the road Thursday. LC hosts the Lou Iaconetti on Saturday: This will be the 65th year running. Varsity Baseball-3rd Annual Region Invite @ Lake Central and @ Munster Game 1 @LC: LC 11 Mishawaka Marian 3 Game 2 @LC: LC 6 Indianapolis Cathedral 2 Game 2 @Munster: LC 9 Homestead 3 Lake Central opened the Region Classic in pool play and hosted Mishawaka Marian and Indianapolis Cathedral on Friday night. The night featured a 45 minute, dust storm delay in game 1 and another 45 minute to an hour delay in game 2. At 11PM game 2 concluded and LC finished pool play 2-0 to make them the 1 seed for bracket play and put them in the championship game at Munster. In the championship, against state ranked #5 Homestead, Grant Mercer was masterful and efficient throwing a complete game in just 74 pitches. Mercer didn't walk a Spartan Hitter. LC scored often in this one and cruised to a 9-3 victory. Drew Kosteba had 3 hits and Dylan Hein had 2. Jake Figg, Parker Robinson, and Tyler Colburn all had hits. In game 1, LC pushed runs across in 6 of the 7 innings played and defeated Mishawaka Marian 11-3. Ethan Chapman went the distance and earned the win, allowing just 3 hits. Chapman carried a no hitter into the 5th inning. Figg, Hein, Kosteba, and Jacob Zimmerman all had at least 2 hits. Hein, Kosteba, Robinson, and Zimmerman all drove in at least 2 runs. In game 2, LC defeated 3A state power Cathedral 6-2. Zach Nicola worked around a rough first inning, throwing 6 scoreless. He earned the win, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 9. Figg and Zimmerman each added a pair of hits. This will be another busy week for the 20-4 Indians: Tuesday @ Mville; Wednesday (senior night) vs Mville; Saturday vs Northridge and NorthWood; Memorial Day @ HC Tennis @ Westfield's Shamrock Invite 1st Place-Westfield (3-0) 2nd Place-Lake Central (2-1) 3rd Place-Harrison (1-2) 4th Place-New Palestine (0-3) Lake Central lost to the host team, state ranked #4, Westfield 5-0. They defeated New Palestine 3-2, and then defeated Harrison 4-1 for a great weekend. The ladies are now 16-3 on the season.
