The LaPorte Slicers wrestling team demonstrated incredible grit and determination this past weekend, earning a solid 3-2 record against tough competition. This brings their overall season record to 9-6, a strong showing in a season that’s just heating up. While the team faced some challenges, the Slicers’ commitment to improvement was evident, with standout performances from several wrestlers. The weekend kicked off with a tough loss to the Merrillville Pirates, who edged out the Slicers with a 61-18 victory. Despite the setback, LaPorte bounced back with remarkable resilience, taking home victories in three consecutive matches. The Slicers rolled to a dominant 64-12 win against Culver Academies, followed by a commanding 67-12 triumph over South Bend Adams. They capped off the day with a hard-fought 40-28 win over Rensselaer Central, proving that they can rise to the occasion when it counts. One of the most impressive performances came from senior Porter Ivankovig, who went an undefeated 5-0 on the day. With this flawless performance, Porter’s record for the season now stands at an outstanding 14-1, a testament to his hard work and determination on the mat. His relentless approach to each match is setting a great example for the team and showcasing his leadership as they move forward in the season. Bryice Fain also delivered an impressive performance, finishing 4-1 for the day. With a 13-2 record on the season, Bryice is proving to be a key asset to the Slicers’ lineup. His competitive spirit and ability to perform under pressure make him a wrestler to watch as the season progresses. Although the Slicers faced another tough loss to Lowell (59-12), the team’s growth and perseverance were clearly evident throughout the weekend. Every match, win or loss, is an opportunity to learn and improve, and LaPorte is well-positioned to build on their momentum. Looking ahead, the Slicers are eager to get back on the mat this Wednesday, December 10th, as they take on Michigan City at LaPorte High School at 6:30 p.m. This is another important match, and with their confidence boosted by their strong performances this past weekend, the Slicers are ready to continue their climb.
