England Advances to Wrestling State Finals

The LaPorte Slicers had three wrestlers compete in the semi-state tournament hosted by East Chicago this past Saturday. Riley Griffin (10-8) and Samuel Pressler (18-19) had their seasons come to a close in the first round of the semi-state tournament. Griffin fell to Brody Blevins of Mishawaka High School via a 14-8 decision. Pressler got pinned by Vinvent Freeman of Penn High School. Josh England (27-9) won his first match decisively against Jake Pertas of Penn High School. England second period pin of Petras advanced him into the second round of the tournament. In order to advance to the Indiana state tournament, England would have to defeat his second opponent as well. In the second round, England wrestled Drake Fritz from West Central High School. Halfway through the third period, England trailed in the match by a score of 8-7. With about a minute left in the match, England took Fritz down, put him straight to his back, and held Fritz there for the remainder of the period. In dramatic fashion, England won by a score of 12-8 over the perviously undefeated Fritz. With this win, England punched his ticket to the Indiana state tournament and willl be wrestling on Friday February 16th in Evansville.
