LaPorte Slicers JV Baseball Sweeps Double Header Against Portage

In the first game, despite seeing their 6-run lead whittled down by the end, La Porte Slicers JV held off for a 7-6 victory on Thursday. Portage Junior Varsity Indians closed the gap by scoring on a walk, a sacrifice fly, a dropped third strike, a double, and a single. Jon Rinkel collected three hits in three at bats in the win. Rinkel singled in the first inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the fourth inning. La Porte Slicers JV jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Khalen Matzke was struck by a pitch, driving in a run, Rinkel singled, scoring two runs, Wes Kaiser singled, scoring one run, and Xander Daley grounded out, scoring one run. La Porte Slicers JV added one run in the second. Noah Combs grounded out, making the score 6-0. La Porte Slicers JV added one run in the third after Daley grounded out. Matzke earned the win for La Porte Slicers JV. The righty gave up zero hits and zero runs over two innings, striking out three and walking one. Daley tossed one inning of scoreless ball for La Porte Slicers JV in relief earning the save. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit, striking out two and walking none. Nolan Wilson and Ian Mitchell also appeared in relief. Daley and Rinkel each drove in two runs for La Porte Slicers JV. Kaiser collected two hits for La Porte Slicers JV in two at bats. In the second game, both teams were strong on the mound, but La Porte Slicers JV defeated Portage Junior Varsity Indians 3-1. Lincoln Grohs started the game for La Porte Slicers JV and recorded nine outs. A single by Khalen Matzke put La Porte Slicers JV on the board in the top of the first. La Porte Slicers JV took the lead in the top of the third. Matzke homered to left field, scoring two runs, to give La Porte Slicers JV the upper hand, 3-1. Grohs earned the win for La Porte Slicers JV. The lefty gave up four hits and one run over three innings, striking out four and walking two. Nate Moses collected the save walking one and striking out three. Jon Rinkel tossed one inning of shutout ball for La Porte Slicers JV in relief. The righty allowed zero hits, striking out one and walking none. Matzke provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led La Porte Slicers JV with three runs batted in. The outfielder went 2-for-2 on the day. La Porte Slicers JV were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Wes Kaiser had the most chances in the field with eight. The Slicers will wrap up their season on Saturday with a tournament at New Prairie. LaPorte’s first game is tentatively scheduled for 11:15 am against Jimtown. The second game will be determined by the outcome of the first game.
